Introduction

In this next lesson our goal is to learn:

  1. How to purchase a domain for your new business
  2. How to setup a custom tracking domain in Clickmagick

Why do you need these elements in your business?

  1. Your domain is one way that you can begin to brand yourself (i.e. digitooly.com in my case)
  2. Your domain is the place where people will find you on the Internet
  3. Your custom tracking link is the only way to know what is working in your business in terms of traffic, conversions and sales

Selecting / Purchasing a Domain

Brand vs. Niche

When choosing a domain, you want to go with something that is either 1) related to the niche or interest you are in or 2) something that you can brand.  For example:

  • powervacuum.com or xtremefitness.com are domains that tell you something about the niches they want to serve.
  • McDonalds.com on the other hand has been branded to mean the place where you buy burgers. You would not know it is related to burgers by just looking at the name.

General Tips on Picking a Name

  1. Use less than 3 words – mindovermatter.com is OK. Less is probably better. Anything more than three words and it’s hard for people to read.
  2. Choose the .COM version of your name. This is the most popular.  Don’t grab .NET, .ORG, .CO or any of the other fancy endings they have nowadays.
  3. Avoid copyright issues. Don’t use someone else’s branded name in your domain name.  IMPORTANT: Do not use “fourpercent” in your name.  It is against company policy.
  4. Don’t choose spammy or cheesy names – futuremillions.com might sound great to you, but it’s going to repel more people than it attracts.

IMPORTANT TIP: Don’t stress out too much on the domain name.  Pick something that sounds good to you, whether on the topic or to brand, and go for it.  If you decide on something else later on, you can always migrate to the new domain with a little work.

Purchasing a Domain

The purchase of your domain is relatively straightforward.

First, you must access your Multiple Streams of Income page inside of your members’ portal and click on the link to create a Namecheap account.

DOUBLE DOG IMPORTANT:  If you do not start from inside of your members’ portal, your sponsor will not receive an affiliate commission when you purchase your domain.

You’ll want to type in the name of your domain name in the search bar, with the .com attached and click on the magnifying glass to begin your search.

If your name is found, you will then have the option to purchase it.

Click on the add to cart icon and go through the normal checkout procedures.  You will be required to pay with a credit card.  Your domain is good for a year after which you will need to renew it.

You will also get some add-on options.

For the moment, there is nothing more you need to add to your domain.  Simply click confirm your order (make sure that your spelling is correct), then pay.

You will receive an order confirmation with your purchase details as well as login information to access your domain’s back office.

Setting Up a Custom Tracking Domain

Introduction

If you’ve been around affiliate marketing for very long, you know that the links you are able to promote are pretty ugly.  Here’s a few:

  • https://app.getresponse.com/site2/90day_blogchallenge?u=SLmjl&webforms_id=12633705

But with a custom tracking domain, these links can be transformed to these:

Do you see the benefits?

The second set of links are branded to you or to your site. They point to something identifiable.  And when it comes to ads (later on), only the second set of links are allowed.

For these reasons, you need to setup your own custom tracking domain.

Mapping Your Domain to ClickMagick

The procedure for connecting your domain with ClickMagick is fairly simple.  If you get stuck, feel free to access ClickMagick’s FAQ article on mapping your custom domain.

I am highlighting the procedure for mapping a custom domain from Namecheap.  The Clickmagick FAQ section has articles for Godaddy, Hostgator,

You’ll want to login to your Namecheap account, under Account > Dashboard.  Afterward, scroll down to find your domain, then click on the “Manage” button to the right.

Advanced DNS Tab

On the next screen, find the Advanced DNS tab and click onto it.

Afterward you’ll want to click on the “+ Add New Record” link, choose “CNAME Record” from the drop down list and make the following entry:

  • Host equals track
  • Value equals www.clkmg.com
  • TTL should be set to automatic.
  • Click on the green check mark to the right and you should be set with this part.

This is a Sub-Domain

I should note that we are technically creating a sub-domain off of your original domain.  Thus your tracking links will begin with “track.digitooly.com” and not just “digitooly.com.”  The reason for doing this is to preserve your domain name for your website at a later time.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Whatever you place in the host column will appear in front of your domain for tracking purposes, for example => track.digitooly.com.  You can place any word in front, but for tracking your links, I would suggest either “track” or “link.”

Creating a Custom Tracking Link in ClickMagick

You are almost home.

Now you’ll need to head over to your ClickMagick account and choose Tools > Domain Manager.

In the Domain box, type in your sub-domain that you created in Namecheap.

Leave all of the other settings as they are:

  1. Setup using CNAME DNS or A Record
  2. For Use With Tracking links.
  3. Then click Add Custom Domain.  You should now see your custom tracking sub-domain in the list.

If you get an error, start over and try again.  If you continue to have problems, please contact ClickMagick’s support center.

Locating Your Affiliate Sales Link

The moment of truth has arrived.  It is now time to create your first tracking link.

Head over to your member’s area and click on Funnels, then choose a funnel and click Promote.

Your affiliate link will map to the sales page of the funnel you are promoting.  It will contain your affiliate ID and up to three parameters, which you can add: keyword, ad, campaign.

Whatever terms you place in these boxes will be added to the end of your affiliate link for better tracking.

DOUBLE-DOG IMPORTANT – Under no circumstances should you ever promote your raw affiliate link.

Do not post it in your e-mails, on your blog, in a Facebook status update or anywhere else.  For starters, it’s quite big and ugly.  Secondly, many platforms prohibit the sharing of raw affiliate links on their system.

Don’t be an amateur.  Wrap your links in ClickMagick.

Creating Your First Tracking Link

Head back over to ClickMagick now and click on Create a Link on the right side.  Add in the following:

  1. Link Name – This should be a short descriptor that helps you identify the purpose of the link. I like to use LP (landing page) if the link is going to an affiliate landing page.
  2. Tracking Link – You should now have your custom tracking sub-domain available for you to choose. This will give your link a nice clean branded look: track.digitooly.com/show-me.
  3. The link ID at the end needs to be at least 4 characters long. It should be a shortened version of your link name so you can easily identify it by just looking at the link.
  4. Your primary URL is where your affiliate link is placed.
  5. Do not worry about cloaking your link for the moment.
  6. Click Create Link and presto, you have your first tracking link.

Congratulations! You’ve come a long way in your setup.  Once you have your tracking link, create several more to track other elements in your business:

  1. Create a tracking link for every funnel
  2. Create a tracking link for different Journey episodes
  3. Create a tracking link for the different products you can promote
