5 Reasons Your Online Business is Failing

I started my first blog on February 24, 2011.

Since that time, I have created 5 websites, 3 video courses, 2 Kindle books, 1 automated webinar and 1 membership site.  I have also started to sell my online marketing expertise through one-on-one consulting.

And in this article, I want to talk you out of doing most of that!

I’m not saying these online business models don’t work.  They do!  In fact, I use several of them in my current business.

It’s just that for most people, the obstacles for success in the online space are simply too great.

I want to provide you with an alternative.

Who Should Read This Article?

I wrote this article for two types of people: the innocents and the grinders.

If you are an innocent, you are brand new to this game, you are excited about the financial possibilities and you feel like you are drinking information from a fire hydrant.

But that doesn’t matter.  You are pumped and can hardly sleep because you feel like you’ve discovered a secret treasure in this Internet Marketing world.  Perhaps this post can help you as you get going.

If you are a grinder, I feel for you my friend.

You are frustrated and spinning your wheels.  You’ve set everything up, you are running traffic and still you get nothing.  You aren’t someone that gives up easily so you keep grinding.

You are now probably in debt, you’ve lost a lot of sleep and every time someone on a Facebook group posts their earnings (without showing you how they did it) you want to throw your computer out the window.

It’s deflating I know.  I’ve been there.

So let me break down the reasons you are not succeeding in your online business.

If I’m going to show you a way out of the madness, it’s critically important that you understand why you are failing.

Reason #1 for IM Failure – You Don’t Have An Irresistible Offer

The first reason you might be failing in your online business is that you do not have an irresistible offer.

An irresistible offer is like a plate of mouth-watering chicken wings in front of a hungry dog. Or like the person who sells lemonade in the desert.

Do you understand?

Your offer has to be something that people desperately want AND need.  And the real secret sauce here is that it has to solve a huge problem in the marketplace.

Reality Check #1 – Low Quality Products

But what is the reality in the marketplace?

If you are into affiliate marketing, you’ve probably been told that all you have to do for online success is to go up on Clickbank, find a high gravity product and start promoting that.

Within 10 days, you’ll be clearing 5 figures at least, right?

Listen, there are some good products on affiliate exchanges like Clickbank and JVZoo. But there are also many products that are simply rehashed content that has been slapped together for the sole purpose of making a sale.

The sales pages don’t help since they all have that same look: lots of bright red letters, insane claims and many testimonials of happy customers.  Plus, don’t forget the big red arrows pointing to the crossed-out price that reveals the supposedly true price:

$297 Only $47 today!

The Psychology of Preying

What is worse is that some of these products and sales pages are psychologically preying on people’s worst fears with desperate sounding headlines.  This is what happens in the relationship, weight loss or even the make money online industry.

Reality Check #2 – You Can’t Create an Irresistible Offer

Your other option is to try to create something for the market. But this takes quite a bit of knowledge and marketing expertise.  There’s also the technical hurdle of video equipment and editing and who knows what else.

Reality Check #3 – Great Offer But Missing Other Pieces

There are also many good products that you could promote but typically you are missing some other important pieces to the puzzle.

You won’t be able to get targeted traffic, you don’t have a system to promote this product nor do you have the proper training.

So that’s the first reason you are failing in your online business.  You don’t have an irresistible offer.  And even if you did, you are missing other key ingredients.

Later on, I’ll show you what an irresistible offer looks like.

Reason #2 for IM Failure – You Don’t Have Targeted Traffic

The second reason you are failing in your online business is because you do not have targeted traffic to your offer.  If you are like most marketers, this is probably your biggest struggle.

And what are your typical solutions?

  1. The Crapshoot – This is where you blindly start advertising on Facebook or YouTube or through solo ads throwing spaghetti on the wall hoping something will stick. I’ve seen people literally throw away $1000s of dollars with this approach. Oh and also get their Facebook account shut down!
  2. The Firefly – This is where you flutter from one piece of advice to another or one product to another, hoping that you’ll find that magic bullet, secret, hack or tip that will start generating quality traffic for you.
  3. The Big Spender – This is where you plunk down $497, $997 or $1997 for an advertising masterclass or Facebook Ads class from a guru.  But then you realize how much time and effort it really takes to master an ad platform and you give up before you see success.

With our system, targeted traffic will not be a problem since you will be able to tap into a limitless supply.

Reason #3 for IM Failure – Technology Overwhelm and Cost

The third reason most people give up on their online dreams is because of technology.  It is costly and it can be overwhelming to set up and master.

This is what we typically recommend in order to get a traditional online business off the ground:

  1. Domain – $10 per year
  2. Hosting – $15 per month
  3. Landing page software – $47 – $97 per month
  4. Autoresponder software – $17 – $47 per month
  5. Link Tracker – $47 per month
  6. WordPress Premium Theme – $97 per year (some themes are monthly subscription)
  7. E-Commerce software – $47 per month
  8. Video editing software + microphone – $200
  9. Webinar software – $397 per year or $97 per month

And this is before you start talking about paying for traffic or before you’ve even made a dime.

It’s Not About Zero Investment

Listen, I am not suggesting that you can start an online business with zero investment.  If you see that anywhere on the Internet run away!

Besides, what’s the alternative?

A franchise or small business will run anywhere from $200K to $1 million just to get started. So by comparison, spending $3,000-$5,000 per year is peanuts in order to have a shot an online success.

For a lot of people though, this amount is still a big barrier to entry.

And it begs the question: Is there a cheaper alternative that provides most of the same functionality?

I think you know the answer.  But before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s continue looking at Reason #3

Technology Overwhelm

If the costs of acquiring the right software tools doesn’t do you in, the price of mastering them will.

OMG! (goodness)

This is quite literally like learning another language and in case you weren’t aware, most adults are terrible at learning French, Spanish or German.

Just setting up a typical sales funnel with landing page, thank you page, custom tracking link, affiliate links an autoresponder is enough to make you pull your hair out.

Then you’ve got to write the e-mail sequences.

Same goes for setting up a Shopify store, writing your own e-book, creating your own video courses or setting up a webinar.

Goodness, creating a webinar is like directing a movie.  I know!  I’ve conducted dozens of them and I sell a product to teach people how to create profitable webinars.  It’s not for the faint of heart.

Most people simply don’t have the time or patience.

But I’m here to tell you, there is a better, less overwhelming way.

Failure Reason #4 – You Don’t Have a System for Selling

In lots of industries you have automation.

A franchise is a good example, whether it’s McDonald’s, UPS stores or H&R Block.

Each of these franchises has a system to which you plug in which guarantees your success.  All of the forms, all of the processes, everything is built in to ensure maximum efficiency.

In the online world, a system means that you have fully functioning funnels, pre-written e-mail sequences, targeted traffic sources, conversion strategies and training all of which are fully automated.

A system also means that someone has tested out the profitability of particular sales funnels and has proven that they work.  If you send quality traffic into the front-end of a good marketing system, you will see sales and conversions on the back-end.

Reality Check – Haphazard Way

If you are a typical marketer, however, yours is the haphazard way.

You don’t have a strategy or a system for anything you do.  Thus, you simply create a website and start writing random blog posts.  Or you head over to Clickbank, grab your affiliate link and start promoting that hoping to make a sale.

Or you’ll write and e-book or create a video course without even knowing if there is a demand for that topic or without the slightest clue about how to really market your offer.

Or, you might even start to see some success but you don’t really have a system to track what is working or to scale your business in any meaningful way.

The result is losses and frustration as you grind away with little results.

Reason #5 for IM Failure – You Don’t Have a Leveraged Ascension Model

An ascension model simply means that you have a low barrier to entry product (which is part of your irresistible offer) and then more expensive products on the back end.

Leverage means that you can earn commissions from the efforts of people on your team or that you are selling a product which has a recurring monthly commission.  A great system incorporates both leverage points.

Typically, in affiliate marketing, you simply promote one product at a fixed price.  This means that you must continually find new prospects and customers if you want your income to increase.

In a leveraged ascension model system, you receive recurring monthly commissions on some products, commissions on ascension products and overrides on the sales of your team members’ products.

The result is an income stream that is more stable and which requires fewer customers and team members to succeed.

Introducing One System To Eliminate All Headaches

So what if I told you that there was a marketing system that eliminated nearly all of the typical headaches of an online business?

  1. Irresistible Offer – The system itself would be the irresistible offer giving you a tremendous value at a fraction of what you’d expect to pay.
  2. Targeted Traffic – You would have access to targeted traffic and an almost unlimited market including: small business owners, entrepreneurs, digital content creators, home based business entrepreneurs, bloggers, online marketers and so many more.
  3. Minimal Technology – Your investment in technology would be minimal and you would be able to recover the cost through a self-liquidating offer.
  4. System for Selling – You would have access to a complete selling system, all funnels, landing pages, sales pages, e-mail sequences, banners and ad images, would already be created and ready for you to use.
  5. Leveraged Ascension Model – An ascension model whereby the system is the low barrier to entry point with an ascension built-in and the ability to earn commissions from your back-end sales.
