My Digital Journey – Episode #1

Ever since I was 19 years old, I’ve wanted to be rich.

I think part of that was because we didn’t have a lot growing up. We always lived in subsidized apartment housing. And we were on welfare. I still remember some faceless person delivering these big slabs of cheese and three-gallon milk containers to our apartment every week as part of a government program.

And the food stamps.

Yeah, we’re talking old school, small colored-bills that you could use to buy groceries at the store. But you could only buy food. No luxuries. I was always so embarrassed when I paid with food stamps that I never looked the checkout person in the eye.

No Money Down

When I was 19 years old, I heard about a no money down real estate investment seminar.

When I arrived at the hotel on the day of the seminar, the place was packed. As I took my seat, each speaker got up, one by one, and shared their secret for making lots of money in real estate, with no money down!

I was fascinated.

And then I saw the price for their courses: $297 to $497 each! In 1984, that was a boatload of money. For a 19 year old college kid from a low-income family, it might as well have been a million dollars.

Quick on My Feet

But I so wanted that course, that I did what any enterprising and hungry entrepreneur would have done in my situation…

I stole it!

You heard right. I committed my first crime in a decade after having stolen a pack of gum when I was a kid in elementary school. The great hotel robbery.

After one of the speakers had finished his talk, I went up to a table, looked around to make sure no one was paying attention and then grabbed a bag full of books and cassettes. I bolted from the hotel room like a jackrabbit ducking a pack of wolves.

I kept waiting for someone to shout, “Hey, stop that thief!” But there was only silence and the patter of my feet against the carpet, plus my own heartbeat.

I had my ticket to freedom. I was on my way to making millions.

To be continued…

What Are Your Dreams?

I’ll pause my story here for the moment. Check back soon for the next episode of my digital journey.

In the meantime, I’d be curious to know if you’ve ever dreamed like I have.

Have you ever wanted to be financially free? Have you ever dreamed of “making it big”? What would that look like for you? What would you be willing to do to achieve that dream (hopefully not steal like I did)?
