What is an Autoresponder?

What is an autoresponder?

Besides being a potential money tree for an online business, an autoresponder is essentially a very sophisticated secretary that handles communication with your prospects and clients.

In the online world, an autoresponder is used to build a mailing list to which you can now market your products and services.

The beauty of an autoresponder is that it allows you to collect your prospects’ e-mail address.  This opens a two-way line of communication that is extremely valuable for your business.

Studies show that e-mail is a powerful medium of selling.

  1. You are speaking to people through a medium they regularly use and communicate with
  2. Your e-mail list has already raised their hand and told you they are interested in what you have to offer
  3. E-mail is two-way.  You can send surveys and ask for feedback, which allows you to better serve your clients
  4. E-mail allows you to deliver written content, links to articles / blogs, videos and any other type of digital information that moves your prospect to a final purchase

To answer the question, what is an autoresponder requires that you understand the basics of an online sales cycle:

  1. Customer arrives on your site, usually through a Google search or paid advertising (Facebook, Bing, Google Adwords)
  2. You collect your customer’s e-mail address in exchange for something your potential customer values.  This is typically information, if your prospect is looking for a solution to his / her problem.
  3. The e-mail address is now stored in an autoresponder software (like Mailchimp, Aweber, GetResponse, Convertkit, etc)
  4. The autoresponder now kicks in an begins sending your prospect a series of e-mails, automatically. These e-mails introduce your brand, provide more information about your products, handle objections and promote offers.

Using an auto-responder requires a few basic setup steps.

1) Pick an auto-responder

First, you’ll need to decide on which one to use.  If you are just starting out and haven’t a clue, it will probably be best to use something like a free Mailchimp account.

You can build a list of 2,000 people and send out 12,000 messages for free.

Beyond that, you really can’t go wrong with the autoresponders on the market.  They all have many of the same features, though some will include link tracking and landing page creation, so it’s best to check their features for yourself.

Some of the top brands included Aweber, GetResponse and Convertkit.  Most come with a 30-day free trial.

2) Create a list

Within your autoresponder, you will need to create what’s called a list.  This is the place where your prospects’ e-mails will be stored.

It’s not very complicated.  You’ll need a list name, YOUR contact information, which appears on every e-mail as part of an anti-spam policy.

3) Create a series of e-mails

Next, you’ll need to create a series of e-mails that you want every subscriber to your list to receive.  If you are trying to promote a product, then you can schedule a series of 7 e-mails for example that lists the features and benefits, handle objections and so forth.

You decide on the number and the schedule.  The first should go out right after someone subscribes to your list.  This is the intro e-mail that introduces you and your brand.

4) Create a form

Once you have an automated series, you then create a form inside of your autoresponder to capture your prospects’ e-mail address and maybe contact name.  Less is better.

However, some businesses require a sales call, and so you’ll want to capture your prospects’ phone number on your form.

Your form is connected to your e-mail list and then it is placed inside of your website with a code that you receive from the autoresponder.

You can also get fancy and build what are called Landing Pages. These are very nice looking web pages that have a form built into them to capture e-mail leads.

You can see examples from my own campagins here, here and here.

There are several Landing Page softwares on the market with the most popular being , LeadPages and .
